Vitamin B1 [ Thiamine] : Function and Sources

So, last week we talked about Vitamin A- Retinol , its sources and function, so this week, we will be looking at the second alphabet vitamins, its children as well as grandchildren. Lol

Thiamine vitamin as it is commonly reffered to is one of the most important members of the B group vitamins, B1 is anti beri beri and anti neuritic and yes it is a water soluble vitamins.

Vitamin B1 lost its nutritional.value when excessive heat is applied through cooking, more so addition of cooking soda further increases the destruction of this vitamin.

Recommended daily allowance

  • Men. 1.3mg
  • Women. 1.0mg
  • Children. 1.1mg
  • Infants.   50mcg
Functions

Thiamine promotes growth, protects the heart muscle, and stimulate brain action.

It also plays an important role in the normal functioning of the entire nervous system. Aids digestion, especially of carbohydrates.

The vitamins prevents constipation, helps to maintain normal blood count, improves circulation and promotes healthy skin.

It also reduces fatigue, increases stamina and prevents prrmature ageing. Woow, a lot for its function right, information is really the key to healthy living.

Lastly, like other vitamins of the B complex group, it is more potent when.combined with other vitamin B family, rather than when used separately.

Moving over to the sources of this great vitamin. 

Sources

Wholegrain cereals especially wheat, rice and oats are generally considered to be the best sources of thiamine, however, when they are highly refined as flour or maybe polished rice, the amount of thiamine os considerably reduced.. sure told ya


More sources are legumes such as soya beans and bengal gram are also good sources

Vegetables. Such as dry lotus stem, capsicum, turnip green and beet green are yet sources

And of course fruits like apricot and pineapple, nuts like groundnut, pistachio and mustard seeds

And last but not the least, animal food like, pork, sheep, liver and mutton... great sources huh?
